Where Spirits Live edition by Omri Navot Children eBooks Reviews
So rarely do we get a chance to step outside ourselves into fantasy. Navot gives us that chance - and even more unusual is that in the process he somehow reminds us of the adventure we are actually living. Where Spirits Live is not just for children, but for all of us who carry our inner child every day.
Combining fantasy and whimsy with the serious issues of being an outsider in those uncomfortable pre-teen years, Where Sprits Live takes the reader on an enjoyable but lesson-filled ride. The characters are sweet and sensitive, and Navot does a wonderful job capturing the voice of an 11-year-old.
Wow! I just breezed through this contemporary fantasy novel in a single, big sitting! Navot quickly draws the reader into the complicated life of his urban preadolescent protagonist. As a whole, the work is both approachable for a young reader but also complex enough to engage older ones as well. Overall, a remarkable first novel!
This is a gentle, funny, touching story about 11 year old Angela, (or maybe 22?) her experiences in this "hard world" and also discovering the new "soft world".
Fascinating. Yet the story would interest EVERY age, every person who is, like me, looking to open up to the unknown, to the mysteries of our lives. I enjoyed it immensely !
The tone of the book was lovely -- dreamlike and thoughtful. I especially loved the two main characters and their friendship. Very sweetly portrayed. I liked the spirit journeys part but also I liked that the main character learned about how her body was also a tool in her life, and as important as her spirit.
Great first novel, I highly recommend it to anyone!
This book is well written in the sense that it feels genuine, as though you are truly reading it from the perspective of an 11 year old girl. As a result you find yourself easily relating to the main character, Angela, and all of her innocence and ideals. What made this book particularly poignant to me is the contrast of Angela's childish exuberance in the face of stark realities like divorce and death. Despite her age, innocence, or lack of experience this character embodies a desire we all share The pursuit of all-around, general well-being.
In "Where Spirits Live," author Omri Navot tells a touching coming-of-age tale through the eyes of eleven-year-old Angela. Angela, like most preteens, feels uncomfortable in her own skin and fears the social battlefield at school. She finds solace and friendship in Itamar, "the weird kid," who broadens her spiritual horizons and teaches her to see the beauty in the world as well as in herself.
I hadn't expected to feel so engrossed in a young adult fiction novel, yet I couldn't put this book down. Perhaps this is the mark of good fiction- while written for a certain audience, it has the power to engross all ages. Anyone who's ever felt alienated or searched for meaning in the world will identify with Angela. I found myself wishing I too could "soul travel." Navot's lush descriptions of their journeys makes them almost seem possible.
"Where Spirits Live" can be easily understood by the young adult reader and thoroughly enjoyed by "mature" ones (this 26 year old got misty-eyed at the end.) Highly recommended!
