The author, a native of Philadelphia and an alumnus, as was Wilt Chamberlain, of Overbrook High School, spent four years researching and interviewing the most important people in Wilt's life. The result is a capturing of Wilt's personality and thoughts that relatively few people other than family and closest friends ever knew.

I was still a kid in elementary school when Wilt retired, but I remember reading a Scholastic book on him, and being a local suburban Philadelphia area kid, I was intrigued by this giant of a player. The Philadelphia area has a great tradition of sports-talk radio, and one of the icons is Sonny Hill. Sonny knew all the old-school greats like Wilt and Hal Greer and the rest of the championship team. Sonny has a Sunday morning 'Living Room' show I enjoy listening too. Anyway, bottom line is I trust Sonny when he says Wilt is the greatest of all time. But apart from some Sonny anecdotes, I didn't have much besides old reference site stat lines when sparring with my friends who think Jordan was the greatest. Well, after reading this enjoyable account, I can say I am well-armed. This book should be mandatory reading for all the ESPN talking-head fawners over Jordan. If they are honest, they too will come to the conclusion that Wilt was, and still is, the greatest to ever play the game. Anyone who says he wouldn't be the first pick of their all-time team to play for them is crazy. Well done Mr. Cherry.Product details

Wilt Larger than Life (Audible Audio Edition) Robert Cherry DeMario Clarke Audible Studios Books Reviews
While growing up in the 60's and an avid sports enthusiast, I did not follow NBA players but I was certainly aware of Wilt Chamberlin. I remember how athletic he was for such a tall and large man. He was a terrific role model on the court, as he was respectful to his teammates and opponents. He was not a dirty player or a trash talking bully. He touched so many lives in a positive way. He genuinely liked people, and people like him. There will never be another athlete who accomplished so much on the court and off of it. Richard Conway
Absolutely a great book about Wilt. Every page has little details of his life and the people around him. I loved Wilt...who didn't. I still get a great feeling when I read or see a news clip. WILT is a must read. I have one con....take that Lakers shirt off. Wilt was a Warrior...always will be.
Great read. It contains lots of anecdotes of all the little small favors Wilt did for people. here was a guy who was unquestionably one of the greatest athletes of all time - and he went out of his way to help normal people sometimes. And he wasn't a loser - he just had lots of bad luck, losing lots of game 7s, the most astounding fact is his endurance and actually played more than 48 minutes a game in a season before. Russell, Kareem or Wilt - all great centers, but I think Wilt had the most personal charm out of the three.
Robert Cherry does a great job of organizing and documenting the important events of Wilt's life. I found this to be a great read and gained a lot of insight into his perspective on the game and how it changed him over time. Inspired deeply by his mindset and competitive spirit.
This is a most excellent sport's biography. The author tells the story of the incredible Wilt Chamberlain and does NOT get "bogged down" with statistics (which would have been so easy to do considering who the subject was.) Wilt's life and his NBA career were fascinating. I am so pleased that Robert Cherry decided to write this comprehensive biography of this "lager than life" sports hero, revealing to us the '"real" Wilt and by doing so, ....setting the record straight. (By the way, I did root for Goliath)
I highly recommend this book.

If ever there was a larger than life sports legend in America it was Wilt Chamberlain. Like a Greek god, he was bigger, faster and stronger than the mere mortals that surrounded him. In this excellent biography, Robert Cherry covers Chamberlain's life in its entirety--from his boyhood in Philadelphia to his death in LA at the early age of 63 and makes every effort to show the real man behind the sports legend. I was particularly impressed with Cherry's treatment of how Chamberlain was recruited to Kansas. As Cherry tells the story there were so many under the table offers by so many colleges that IRS agents finally showed up at Chamberlain's house. The tale tells a lot about the state of college basketball in the 1950s.
Another example of the more human elements of Chamberlain's personality was the brief section on how much he enjoyed just being a college student at KU. He loved hanging out with the guys, playing cards, pulling pranks and participating in intramural activities.
The book also details Chamberlain's basketball career as a Jayhawk, including the dramatic 1957 triple overtime NCAA championship game and includes excellent coverage of the legend's career in the NBA with his clash-of-the-titans battles with Bill Russell. The overall result then is a well researched, well balanced and highly readable biography of a man who was a major force in the shaping of the modern game of basketball.
Having grown up in Phila., and having followed Wilt over his whole career (I am 7 years younger), I looked forward to this book. I was not disappointed. The author appears to have done a lot of research, including interviewing many people who interacted with Wilt at various stages of his life. I especially liked the fact that the author went tinto considerable detail about Wilt's personal and post-basketball life. It is written well. I would have preferred more comments about Wilt from the players who played against him and with him. There is a fair number, but I would have liked to have seen more, possibly through another 15-20 pages. Occasionally, the author lapses into a flip and sarcastic style, but it is not enough to be bothersome. I ideally would have rated the book as a 4.5, but since we can't give half point ratings, and since the book really is very worthwhile and enjoyable, I gave it a 5. The author did a fine job.
